  1. All they do is lie to you

A terrible company, DO NOT HIRE THEM UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. They gave me a 3-day pickup window and said they would call a few days in advance to tell me which day the truck would arrive. They did not call, they did not respond to my calls and voicemails. Finally I got sales on the phone and they sent a truck that they knew was too small. The driver showed up, complained that there were not enough people to help, and left. Came back with more people the next day and loaded what would fit, leaving my garage full of about 35 items that were on my inventory to be moved along with a huge pile of trash that came off his truck to make space. Promised customer service would call the next day to arrange to transport the rest and remove the trash. That was five weeks ago. Customer service never called, never responded to my voicemails or emails. All my calls went directly to voicemail which was never returned. When I called from a borrowed phone the calls went directly through. When I identified myself I was sent to voicemail, which was never returned, and the owner of the borrowed phone immediately got marketing phone calls and text spam from American Van Lines. Driver advised me to leave a negative review as the only way to get a response so I did, they called the next day. Wasted another ten days and denied the pile of trash they left in my garage, then quit responding to emails or voicemails. The company never offered a plan to complete my move, never arranged to remove the trash pile they left, and now completely refuses to communicate. Zero integrity, zero professionalism, clear intent to deceive the customer and absolutely no intent to adhere to the terms of their contract.

  2. Terrible Service

This company has no sense of client service--confirms a pickup and delivery date and then doesn't show up and even though they know you have changed all of your plans (at additional expense, in my case) and are waiting for them doesn't bother to let you know that the date has changed by one or two days! And, when you call them to ask why they didn't show up and when they will show up, they act like you're bothering them and don't provide any information until just before arrival. This happened on both pickup and delivery!

  3. DO NOT USE THEM

I will not rest until this company is shutdown. And I will do everything in my power to do so

Pick up window was June 17-20. They never called. I had to call to get info. Two HIGH drivers came with 0 tools to pick up.

Drop off was July 12. It’s July 11 today and no calls no email no communication whatsoever. Tomorrow is the last day of “ drop off window “ which mind you was 20 days LOL. I have been sleeping on the floor for 20 days hoping my furniture arrive.

Good luck calling them and getting anywhere.

I called and texted the owner, I had his number because of the “ pick up issues l had so I was expecting problems with drop off. He didn’t reply nor answer any of my calls.

  4. Fraud and Scammers

DO NOT USE THIS PLACE.....DO NOT......this place is a total scam, they tell you what you want to hear and tell you the pick up dates are not guaranteed even after a month waiting for pick up. They do not want to refund any money stolen from you, yes stolen, if this was a legit business they would admit they have a problem or made a mistake and make a refund that they are very quick to take from you. People read the reviews and not the ones they made up, they are here online. DO NOT USE THIS FRAUDULENT BUSINESS.

  5. Use another company

Do not use. They cancelled on our cross country move last minute (3 days before), then offered us $500 compensation tied to an agreement that would prevent me from sharing our story. I chose to share my story than take the hush money. We had to scramble to figure out plan B and plan C. It was an unnecessary amount of stress on top of the already stressful activity of moving. Use someone else.

  6. Worst Move Ever

Poor Customer Communication. My personal coordinator did not give me enough information on how to get my estimate and when I tried to call her and email her to find out the time the movers were delivering my stuff, she ignored my calls and emails.

The original estimate was done poorly and when they came to move my stuff, I had to pay twice as much as the original estimate, because the way the estimate was done was done poorly. If I had more information from the estimate upfront, this would have gone better.

The actual movers came very late in the day- pick up didn't start until 4:00 pm and finished after 11:00 pm. Drop-off started after 6:00 pm and finished after 9:30 pm. This made it difficult to drive anywhere after pick up to stay the night and to get the apartment ready to stay in the day of the drop-off.

The movers broke several pieces of furniture, didn't tell me and then glued them back together, poorly. They then asked that I sign a sheet stating nothing was damaged and told me at that time that they didn't see any damage, after they glued things back together.

    Go somewhere else!!

  7. Lousy service and customer service

I hired then for the sole reason that they claimed to be certified piano movers. They are not. They could not get my baby grand into the elevator it came up in. They had to leave it. I hired real piano movers who got it into the elevator in minutes. While this was going on, they did not return my calls for days. I had to pay another company to take it and now I am paying storage while I find someone to move it to the new location. I still had to pay them extra $3,00- for the piano. They do not respond to emails. My original quote was around $7000 including the piano. It ended up being around $10,000 without the piano.

They used a third party fro my move who did not speak English. The took the stuff I had in a corner for Good Will because they did not understand. The charged $17 to wrap plastic around my mattress and and boxspring. I was told it would be a special mattress cover.

I have no idea whether I will hear from them again. They were 7 days late. You get $30 a day refund. They charged extra because my storage unit was not in the front of the building. If they had told me, I could have gotten one closer to the front. The inventory list is illegible. I could go on.....

    I do not recommend.

  8. Contract Not Honored

We moved from Florida to Wisconsin and needed to store our furniture for one month. We were told that our furniture would be stored in their warehouse in Pompano Beach. Everything was dumped in three U-Haul warehouses with no padding or wrapping in Wisconsin. Big boot prints on our sofa. Our mattress was covered in dirt from being dragge across the floor - no wrapping - it left our house wrapped. Arms of three chairs broken. Our bedroom furniture has deep grooves and our entertainment center has gouges on each side. We did not purchase the most expensive insurance so coverage wouldn't cover repair costs. Movers sent a video to their supervisor when they saw the mess in the U-Haul warehouses. We finally gave up on negotiating with their "Customer Service" department. Their representative was excellent at not acknowledging what had happened to us or accepting any responsibility. We would like our $16,000 returned because they broke the terms of their contract. They did not honor their part of the contract and I don't understand why there is no recourse.

  9. Horrible experience

Multi-state move. Contracts are a mess – all digital (until you make a claim, then they mail a letter and contract as described below), the representatives insist they can’t alter even obvious errors. Little notice before pick-up, no notice before delivery at all (got a phone call in Target). Their movers broke/scratched/otherwise damaged many things, then one of them asked for my number and called and texted me repeatedly while I tried to unpack. (When I texted him a suggestion that he find someone else, he immediately called me to insist that he wasn’t interested in me.)

Now (over six months later), they won't honor the claim. They say the contract had to be signed within thirty days. However, they say they sent it in December, but it never arrived. I had to call them to ask what was going on. When they finally got the contract to me, it still had December’s date, so they tried to argue that I hadn’t signed within the required period. (Note: They are the ones who required a thirty-day turnaround, so they could waive that requirement.)

Moreover, their contract contained a blatantly illegal requirement that I delete or revise all negative reviews and never say anything bad about them. (The relevant law is the Consumer Review Fairness Act.) I hadn't actually made any, as I like to give companies a chance to fix their mistakes. AVL whiffed on that one.

Overall, they make it incredibly difficult for people to do business with them. People who are moving do get pushed into difficult situations, but at least try to avoid getting pushed into working with AVL.

  10. Cross country move worse than overseas move

    1. Was totally rushed thru the inventory list with sales rep. Then was told fee was based upon weight, but when truck arrived, was told it was by item and that I had too many things. Had to give away a lot of furniture at the last minute. Plus, the movers labeled some pieces, like the dining room table as 5 items (top & 4 legs) even though legs could not come off table.

    2. Stated they would give me 48 hours notice of delivery date, but was given less than 24 hours. Was able to get off work, but they didn't show up until after 5pm and since it was raining, they decided to wait until next day to begin at 6am. Had to get another day off work, and they didn't start until after 10am, even after calling company HQ for support.

    3. Multiple major pieces of custom made furniture badly damaged - caning on dining room chairs punched thru, gouging of wood furniture. This was furniture that has moved overseas multiple times without damage. A futon frame was destroyed, side table "lost", hardware for disassembled pieces lost. They did not have tools to disassemble/assemble furniture, which was part of the fee - had to borrow from neighbors.

    4. I paid extra for 2 oversized pictures to be custom crated but they just wrapped in moving blankets after telling me that they would crate in the moving van.

    5. Several boxes were torn and damaged - almost looked like they were clawed by wild animals. Family photos inside were damaged.

Avoid American Van Lines at all cost.

  11. Not Recommended

Major concerns in using this company for a residential move out-of-state.

    1. Initial sales rep over-estimated the weight by several thousand pounds with a binding contract- even after the load is weighed, the contract cannot be changed. This amounted to several thousand dollars excess in payment.

    2. American Van Lines informed me on the day of the move that crating some large items would be necessary costing over $6,000 in additional charges. (American added they would not require crating if I dropped the added insurance policy. Note: without the added insurance American coverage is at a rate of 60 cents/pound).

    3. The three day moving window in the contract was not adhered to causing an unacceptable situation for the new buyers of the home. Separate moving and storage costs on my part became necessary and difficult to coordinate due to the weekend.

    4. Many items arrived scratched, and some broken. A claim was filed within the designated allowable period and to date, nine months later, I have heard nothing from the company.

This is my third time to hire movers for a residential out-of-state move and by far the worst. It was an experience I wish not to remember. I would definitely not recommend American Van Lines for your move.

  12. Misleading

Misleading . No response to email or phone calls till delivery date only to say it will arrive two weeks later.
