  1. Complete nightmare

Stay far away! We unfortunately used Don Farr June 11 for a local move, 15642-15642. First, they showed up late, upon arrival they came in one small truck and only 2 men. Our estimate was 2 large trucks and 4 men. So now we waited for another truck and 2 more men. Once they finally all arrived they began. It was clear they were ill prepared, none of our items were protected, no pads, blankets or plastic wrap. Myself and my husband asked them to please provide protection, they smugly declined.

During the process they told us if we didn't like how they move we should do it ourselves.

Once the move was over we found all the damages. A 1 year old SS refrigerator, of which I have the receipt proving purchase date and price, covered in dents and scratches on all 3 sides... and they somehow managed to break the plug. How does this happen? My 6 month on dining set, large gauges and multiple chips in 4 of 6 chairs. My king headboard snapped, a leg on my buffet table cracked and our 9 year olds loft bed so incompetently put together a piece was missing! A mover handed me a leg to my TV stand and said "don't worry Ma, just file a claim." Not one of the men could drive the large moving truck, they all tried to pull it out of a flat driveway, almost taking out 2 cars. This staff were incredibly undertrained, unmannerly and lazy. They most certainly didn't care about the job or our furniture. Then had the audacity to wait for tips.

Now the claims part. Monday June 14 we called to start the process. We are told they will mail the packet out. A week goes by and nothing. Multiple calls and nothing. Monday the 21 we go to Don Farr to fill them out in person. We're told "it's hard to get staff, no one wants to work" Not my problem, don't take a job you can't handle. Few weeks go by we hear nothing, few phones calls no replies. Then we are in contact with with Lynne, who handles the claims, she's incredibly smart mouthed and sends snippy emails if she replies at all! Unacceptable behavior. Today we finally get our claim resolved in the mail, 350.20. What a slap in the face! We now have over 2,000 in damages and they suggest 350? Take accountability for your sorry excuse of a company. Provide proper training so this doesn't happen again. This has been an absolute nightmare. Mr Fixx, well you should be embarrassed, you can't even correct the major damage YOUR company cost. So please, do your research, they have many accusations with the BBB with horror stories like mine. If you value your items, go elsewhere. Attached are a few of the many damages. Hope this helps someone.

  2. Worst movers ever.

They get a zero star. Movers didn’t show up on the day of the move. They gave excuses, lies. Didn’t bring boxes; lied about how many people they were sending. Trying to charge us 2200 for moving a 2 bedroom apartment when we were quoted 700, which we will NOT be paying. Turning them in to the BBB. They should not be allowed to be in business.

  3. Cost more than the quote because of their mistake and extensive damage

I took out insurance from Don Farr, made a claim involving two damages bookcases, three damaged outdoor cast aluminum chairs, chipped picture frames, etc - all of which had been moved safely by other movers in four other moves. The company took months to process my claim and sent a check in exactly the amount of the premium - $500.

Also, months AFTER the move, they charged my $300 more than the final bill because they had to rent a straight truck which they KNEW beforehand. Stay aware and away from Don Farr.

  4. Worst Movers in Pgh.

In January 2020, Don Farr moved my parents from one apartment complex in Monroeville to another about four miles away. Farr was expensive. Its employees were careless; they damaged the cane backs of three mid-century Modern dining chairs (and claimed “they were like that when we got there.”) They also broke two mirrors and two glass tabletops as well as chipped wooden trim from three dressers. The best part, however, is the loss of two pieces of furniture stored in their warehouse. This time the employee claimed, “Oh, your dad didn’t want them and gave those pieces to our crew.” Yes, I paid $1300 for storage and delivery of those items to my home in NJ because my dad gifted them to the moving crew. And here it is, months later, and nothing is forthcoming - not a suitable explanation, not the furniture, not an apology, and not a refund to either my parents or me for any of the loss or damage.

If you value your belongings, your money, and your sanity, you will not hire Don Farr Moving and Storage under any circumstances.

  5. First time using movers.

This was our first experience using movers. Was very nervous but Stan, Cobey, Jim and Charles were an awesome team. Couldn’t ask for a more professional pleasant group of guys working in 90 degree weather. They worked as a team and with caution to avoid hitting walls and not 1 mark. Would request this group again. Great experience.

  6. A nightmare.

This was the worst move of my live and I have moved many times. The first day of the move the trucks did not arrive until 1:10 pm. There were supposed to be 4 men and instead there were 3. One man had a boot on his foot and up his leg from an injury, another was his first day on the job and knew nothing, and the third man does this part time. They had to complete the next day, Saturday, and did not deliver to my new location until Monday. Two large and expensive pieces are damaged beyond repair and other items are scratched and marked. I was very clear that we have big, heavy and expensive furniture. During the Monday delivery I asked the one man if the plan was to get everything into the house and then we could walk around and place boxes, etc where they belonged. He stated this was the plan. Later I walked outside and they were GONE. I called the company and they sent them back and they had an attitude. I had to physically go to their office twice because you cannot get anyone on the phone. I have filed the claim and now received an email that basically says they have 30 days to settle the claim. HORRIBLE. And there was a change on the bill of lading after I had signed.

I paid over $3,000 for this.

  7. Wish I could give 0 stars.

As someone who has moved quite a few times, this is easily the worst moving experience of my life. Started with them showing up late with a crew of 3 instead of quoted 4. 2 of the men were inexperienced (which they told us multiple times) and required repeated direction from the crew leader which took significant time. Despite being told our drawers would remain in place and could be filled with clothing, these guys took each one out and piled it separately in the truck without covers, leading to dirt and filth all over our clothing. One guy injured himself while carrying our child's crib, but didn't bother to clean his blood off of it. We found this at the end of our 11 hour move day (we were moving a 3 bedroom townhouse down the street) while we were trying to get our son to bed. Queue the mad dash to find any kind of cleaning liquid in the pile of boxes that were left in the front foyer despite being labeled as boxes that should've gone upstairs. Nevermind going through what had been freshly laundered clothing that was now covered in dirt to find him something to wear to sleep. Multiple items were damaged. One of the movers spent more time "resting" than actually helping to move, leading my husband to start helping in order to get the day to finish faster. After all of this, and after the crew leader recommending we talk to customer service given we were "screwed over", all they offered was their lowest rate per guy for the entire 11 hours. We paid 800 dollars more than we were originally quoted. Absolutely abhorrent. We had used this service before and had been pleased with the move, but clearly you can't predict what you're going to get and they WILL NOT take care of you if your move was a disaster. I couldn't recommend against a company more than I recommend avoiding this disaster. Save your time, money, and sanity and find someone else.

  8. Terrible at moving and everything else.

From start to finish..they were horrible. From management to crews, communication to timeliness, delays to commitments. The company cared way more about its customers before new management. Terrible how this company has fallen from its founder and original business model.

  9. Kind, respectful, professional, efficient, timely, moving services.

Kind, caring, respectful, professional, efficient, timely, cost effective.  That's what I have to say about Don Farr, in a nutshell.

My mother, lived in Pittsburgh.  She passed away about six months ago  and I had to clean out her estate.  I needed to find a mover to transport the things I wanted to save, the things that are important to me. I had no idea where to find a reliable mover who was also cost effective.  I asked around and ended up calling a couple of national places and one from across the state for estimates. I hadn't chosen anyone yet, I was too busy packing and I ran out of boxes. I was going to Home Depot,  when my cousin, who lives locally in Pittsburgh, called me and said that I should go to Don Farr to get boxes. I had no idea who or where Don Farr was so I looked it up.  I called and Devin answered the phone. He was really nice and yes they had boxes and tape.  I realized that they were a local moving company and so I called back and asked them to for an Estimate.  Maxine answered, who was also really kind and helpful.   She listened to my verbal estimate of boxes and furniture and then gave me two estimates, one being a worst case, it was a "It may be heavier than you think" option. After I got off the phone with her, I decided to call my cousin back and ask her if she knew anything about their moving services.  She said that she had used them for a move 10 years ago and they did a really good job.  My cousin, is a really tough customer by the way, and if she doesn't like something, she'll tell you and everyone else so I felt pretty confident that they must have done a good job.  Her son also used them for a move that was much more recent and he was happy with them. Anyway, I went and picked up the boxes and met John (the long distance dispatcher).  He ended up giving me a whole bunch of boxes that  they refer to as promo boxes and a couple of mirror/glass pack boxes and tape.  They didn't charge for me them.  I went home and continued packing and as the number of boxes increased I started to get nervous that the estimate that I received on the phone may not be correct.  So, I was driving by Don Farr on another errand and I stopped in and asked if someone could come over and give me a visual estimate.  My mom lived about 5 minutes from their offices.  They told me that Devin would come by her house in about 15 minutes.  So, I finally got to meet the friendly voice who had answered the phone.  He looked at everything I had and  thought that it was slightly higher than the original estimate.  It made me feel better to have someone see it rather than relying on what I told them on the phone. After Devin left and I got back to packing, I realized that I needed packing paper too -- I had run out of newspaper. I called John and he told me that I could stop by and pick some up.  He ended up giving a partial roll for free which was plenty of paper for my needs. I went home and packed everything up. I left it at the house ready for them to pick up on our designated date. My neighbor was going to meet them there for me because I had to go back to my current home.

This morning was the day of the pickup.  I called my neighbor to see if they had arrived yet.  Yes, on time.  She said that three very nice men (I wish I had gotten their names) came to move everything out of the house.  They were quick, efficient and careful.  She was very happy with the work that they did.

I have to say that I wish I could give me neighbor a review, if I could, I would give her 5 stars for all of her help. She's top notch.  But she doesn't have a company. She's just a very kind hearted soul who was a good friend of my mom and helped me out a ton.  Thank you to her!!

Back to Don Farr.  So my mom's things are on the truck and scheduled to get to my house in about a week.  I'll write a 2nd review to follow up this one. With the service that I have received so far, I expect that it will also be just as good. .

  10. Damaged EVERY piece of valuable furniture.

Do NOT even consider this company. They damaged most of our valuable furniture, at one point even standing our couch on its arm in a mud puddle! Every time I saw them damage something and asked politely for them to be careful, they literally started dropping boxes marked Fragile! They were the most unprofessional individuals I have ever worked with. I will never be able to replace all the furniture they damaged and they just kept telling me not to worry because I can just file a claim. I now have to fight for months to recover a fraction of what my furniture is worth.

  11. Move from PA to FL.

I will start by saying this was our third move with Don Farr and the first two moves were great with minimal problems. Because of that we trusted that things would be the same on this move so did not buy the extended insurance. The move was horrendous, no other words to describe it. They brought a truck that was too small. The move took hours longer than estimated, and another truck had to be brought the next day to finish up. Four movers on a Saturday and one fellow was so surly and unpleasant with complaining the whole time that he wasn’t supposed to work on a Saturday. He would not use the television boxes we supplied, but rather wrapped the three TVs in blankets. Two flat screen televisions disappeared and never made it to our new home and the third was delivered with a cracked screen, rendering it useless. I additionally lost a box of kitchen items. Many boxes were delivered crushed, upside down. Beds weren’t put together, just a fiasco. I will say that the two men who delivered our items worked very hard. Things come in so fast that you are virtually unable to cross off every item on the inventory list and have to sign it before they leave. We discovered the televisions were missing immediately and we were able to alert the driver BUT they never appeared anywhere. How does that happen? We got a huge (sarcasm) check for the damaged lost item of approximately $80.00..This is our last move but we would never recommend this company to anyone! They have gone downhill from the first time we used them. Additionally when they want your business they will be happy to talk with you on the phone. Good luck trying to get someone to answer after the move. Impossible!

  12. Damaged grandfather clock.

I used Don Farr to move from Pittsburgh to Philadelphia. I moved mostly boxes and just a few furniture items. The most important item that I wanted moved safely was the grandfather clock that I bought my late husband in 1981. It was his baby! I intended to give it to my daughter and her family for their home. The day the movers came to pack my house they could not get the weights removed so they decided that it would work if they just wrapped the weights. I questioned this but they said it would be fine. When my SIL came over to my new house to look at the clock he noticed that the bottom was broken. The weights had fallen and smashed the bottom dust cover and the weights were broken. Along with that they hadn't wrapped the pendulum (when they carried it in the house it was just wrapped in a rag) and that was ruined also. The finnial at the top is missing also along with a leveler on the bottom of the clock. In other words it is a mess! When I called the company to tell them, I was told there was no one available to talk with. After I insisted, I talked with Kevin who said to me "my issue is that it wasn't prepared properly to be moved. The weights should have been removed". They are the professional movers, aren't they? They should know that and should know how to move a clock! I filed the claim but had not taken out the valuation insurance which I don't think should matter in this case because it was not damaged accidentally - it was negligence on their part! I talked with a clock professional here and it will be over $1,000 to fix it properly and he was very surprised that a moving company would move a clock with the weights on. Of course, I can't check on the claim because I'm not able to talk with anyone and I haven't heard anything. Please, don't use Don Farr if you have something that is valuable to you because they really don't care.

  13. Horrible Experience.

The guys are not trained on safely packing your precious belongings on the truck so every piece of furniture that I had taken care of for 30 years in perfect condition has been ALL DAMAGED in just one day..I am devastated..and they rush you to write a review as soon as you go in the door before you have a chance to look around and see the damaged..I am just so sad as I sit in my new place and look around at all the damage of furniture and walls..please use another company and save your self some heartache..

  14. Deplorable quality of service.

Don Farr moving was the absolute worst service I have ever experienced. Not only were the movers completely inefficient, they managed to damage every piece of wooden furniture I own. they left things shrink wrapped, furniture wasn't placed where it was supposed to be, half of the furniture was not put together, there were items left outside and not discovered until the next day, they left garbage in our home, they did not put items in the proper rooms even though the boxes were all labelled and color coded, they damaged our home in multiple places, they took privileges with items already placed in the home and moved them on top of clean laundry and breakable items, it took them 3 hours to remove a washer/dryer/and upright freezer from our basement, I still cannot find 2 shelves for my book cases, not a one of them was able to explain the contracts that needed signing, they moved things they were specifically told not to move, they paid no attention to whether items needed to remain in an upright position (boxes were found upside down and sideways), they dropped things and banged things around (piano included) they also didn't bring the mattress covers, nor did they wrap the furniture appropriately (and it should have stayed wrapped until it was carried to the appropriate room/position. The best part is it took 13 hours for them to destroy everything, past the estimated 10 hours of planned destruction. We have moved before with items placed where they were to go, and ready for living, within 8 hours. After 13 hours, my husband and I had to take furniture apart to move it to where it needed to go so that we could even get to our bed; which was also put practically in the middle of the room. Now I have to plea with them to get a refund for their ineptitude. I also had to take an extra day off of work to fix their mess.

  15. Unreal!!

If I could leave 0 stars I would. I reached out to them for a quote and they immediately set me up for an in-home estimate. They tried to reach me to confirm the appointment, but I was in doctor appointments all day and could not respond. Since they couldn't get in touch with me they Googled my name, found the names of my family members, and called them to track me down. When I called, livid, they said that the information is public domain so they didn't do anything wrong. They literally tracked down my family members to hunt me down! What kind of company searches for potential customer's families, harasses them, and thinks it's ok?!
