  1. Movex contracts its trucks and drivers and is unreliable as a result. Ruined my cross-country move.

This company failed to honor its contract to move my household from MA to CA last summer. When I filed a BBB complaint the company replied that I didn't have a right to complain because I was never their customer. Isn't that ironic - they take my deposit, promise me a Sunday move date and then call to say they won't have a truck for me until until Wednesday - is that okay? No, it wasn't okay with me or the commitments I had made based on moving on Sunday (or at least Monday). So because I didn't respond to their BBB reply within 30 days since the email was lost in my spam filter, the complaint was marked "resolved". So when you look at the low grade for this company at the BBB - realize that many of those "resolved" complaints are actually ones like mine where the person didn't reply in time and the issue was never actually resolved.

Like the other reviewer in this forum, I had to rent a U-haul, tow my sedan with pets in the car (dangerous I know) and spend several hundred dollars more than I was quoted to move my household within my move timeframe. It was very stressful to drive a 17ft truck with a towed car over 3,000 miles.

I understand moves often are delayed by a day - but three days?? That is unacceptable. Yes, they did offer a discount if I accepted their new move date - but it wouldn't cover the lost cost of state park hotels and movers that were not refundable. Not to mention living in an empty house for three days with nothing to do but wait for the movers..everything was packed for a long distance move.

The company does get high marks for honesty because they at least called me 1 day before my move (which I booked 4 months in advance). If they hadn't contacted me - I would be suing them right now.

In conclusion - yes, this company seems professional and gave a good quote and if they were to actually perform the contracted service - may be acceptable - however, they don't own their trucks so they can only cross their fingers and hope one is available when you need it - even if you reserved it months in advance.

If I needed a low budget move again (which I will) I would use ABF which I used for a cross-country move 4 years ago. If you read about all of the possible problems with their trucks and prepare - it's a good move experience given you are trying to save money and not drive the truck yourself. If you don't mind driving, Uhaul does have some newer trucks that are comfortable to drive and not as shoddy as I'd feared. I might try Penske too.

  2. Moving Company.

Not being a procrastinator I started looking for a moving company four months before my move. It was only a minimal amount of stuff that needed to be moved, about 8 square feet, so I was researching different options. All the U-haul trucks were bigger than I needed, as was any pod system, so I decided on a company called MoveX. This company reserves space on a truck, which allows for smaller quantities. Three months before the move I sent in a deposit and signed a contract. The company seemed on the up-and-up. There was a promise page on their web-site that promised a stress free move. They have comments from customers on their web-page. They seemed professional enough! I live in Texas and needed my belongings moved from a small storage unit in South Michigan. Airline tickets were purchased and hotel reservations were made. All that was left was for the time to come. I conveyed to MoveX the nuances of my situation, particularly the fact that we only had a small window of time for the pick-up to take place; they assured me that my date was reserved and everything would go forward without a hitch.
Two days before they were to pick up my stuff I received a call saying that they didn't have a truck available. When I asked why and how this could be, they said that they were very busy and that's just what happens. They asked if I could move my pick-up date back two days and assured me that a truck would be available. Reluctant, I went ahead - changed airline and hotel reservations, in addition to adding a day to my car rental. Then it happened again.
The next day they again said that no truck was available. I asked how this was possible, if there is anything else they could do. They said no, and that was it. After a few hours on the phone with MoveX, expressing my disappointment, the manager asked for some additional time to figure something out. Being that I had to leave the next day, I gave him until the next morning to figure something out and make good on his companies promise and contract to move my stuff. The next day the manager called and said that no truck was available, but that he had a solution..He wanted me to give the keys to my storage unit to his child attending Notre Dame and when a truck was available he would send my stuff. Maybe I am a little cautious, but, I didn't think that that was a very secure and prompt solution. So, I denied their attempt and allowed them to breach their contract.
This contract that I had to sign, forgives them of any responsibility if for any reason they cannot complete their delivery duties. Obviously a well thought out solution to not being held liable for their inability to complete a promised service.
What up-set me is not that they broke their contract, but that they refused to make right their promise of a stress free move. I ended up canceling my airline ticket, renting a u-haul, and driving my stuff myself. The costs were just over $600 more than what their contracted price was for. It was definitely better to handle it myself.
Looking for retribution, just my expenses beyond the original contract, and hoping to stifle others from being thrust into this situation in the future, I decided to spread the word through the internet. This is when I found out that the Better Business Bureau has around 54 filed complaints against MoveX, with more than one complaint similar to mine. I will do my best to explain my situation to as many "moving review" sites as possible. Be careful who you choose for your move..
