  1. Holding Belongings to Extort Money.

The sales person Mary Ciaramitaro of Slater quoted a price in writing not to exceed $20,000 for our March, 2013 move from Las Vegas to Pennsylvania including transport of our vehicles. The day of the move they said they would not put our large plants on the truck even though it looked like they had more room. We had to get everything out by that evening for the closing. I had to threaten the President of the company, Roger Shenfeld on the phone that I would have our community's private security guards prevent his truck from leaving the development if they did not take everything from the house. So they took the remaining items from the house, but then had no room for the items they were supposed to take from our storage unit. However, we were repeatedly assured by our Moving Coordinator Berna Casali that the rest would follow soon on a second truck. When we arrived we were told our cost for "everything" did not include unpacking. That cost us $1,278 extra. Other unexpected additional fees brought the total paid to $23,180.56. Over the past two months we have called repeatedly every few days looking for the rest of our belongings.  Every time we were told they would arrive as soon as the next truck with room on it became available. After two months of complaints we unexpectedly received another bill for nearly $4,000.00 and were told that we are now also liable for local transport charges to their warehouse and for storage fees. This company is engaged in the criminal activity of not honoring price quotes, confiscating your belongings and then extorting even more money based on how much they think you can afford to pay. They destroyed our big screen TV and Allied reimbursed us only $45 for it. We complained to Allied that we still had not received the rest of our belongings and found out they are no longer affiliated with Allied. We were also told that the Moving Coordinator Berna Casali who promised to deliver our remaining belongings is no longer employed there. They are now apparently part of Atlas Van Lines. We have filed complaints with the Las Vegas Metro Police, the BBB and have disputed the charges with our credit card company. This company is engaged in the criminal activity of extorting money - pure and simple. They rip off consumers by jacking up prices, giving fake estimates and holding consumers' belongings hostage.

  2. Dishonest.

When it first became obvious that a family move was inevitable, my wife and I began looking around for a moving company to get some estimates. We assumed it would cost a lot more to go that route over renting a moving truck ourselves, but wanted to see what the price difference would be. We were initially disappointed when we were getting online estimates of $7,000 or more based on a 10,000 lbs load. We didn't know what our weight would actually be, so we assumed 10,000 was average. Then we came across a local company, Slater, who did in home estimates. I thought that would be good to do, since we weren't going to be able to estimate things ourselves very well. So, we made an appointment for the estimate.

Lance came to our house and walked through and filled out his estimate sheet after looking through our house. The estimate included everything in our home, including some stuff we weren't sure if we were going to take our not. We wanted them included in our estimate so that we would have the max cost of the move. The extra items included a california king bed, 2 wood entertainment centers, a solid wood picnic table, a refrigerator and many household items. Lance came up with an estimate of 5,500 lbs at around $3,500, saying several times that the estimate was a high one and thought we wouldn't come anywhere near that number. Hearing that number was amazing. We could spend just a little more than renting a truck ourselves, and we wouldn't have to mess with the loading/unloading or the driving of our stuff. We were sold.

With that number in mind, I accepted a job offer which included a relocation bonus for paying for moving costs. The estimate from Lance fit nicely under that bonus amount. Using Slater was going to be convenient and cost effective. It was a nice bonus to support a local business instead of a company out of Las Vegas, as well.

In the weeks leading up to our move, we went through our things and got rid of a lot of the extra stuff we had so that we could further reduce our moving cost from the $3,500 so that we could have some money left over when we got Virginia. We ended up not taking 1 california king mattress with box springs, 2 entertainment centers, a trampoline, a side by side refrigerator, a front load washer, a front load dryer, the picnic table, and large amount of clothing, books, and household items. We estimated all this stuff to weigh around 1,000 lbs. With the $68 per 100 lbs that Lance told us, that should reduce our cost by around $680.

Everything was going great. The moving truck showed up 15 or so minutes late on moving day, but that wasn't a big deal. Everyone we dealt with was very nice and professional. Everything was loaded up over a couple of hours. There was never a mention of any possibility of going over the estimated weight. As soon as the moving truck pulled away, we were on our way as well.

We were in Kansas when I got the call from Slater with our final weight of 6,580 lbs. Hearing that number after everything we had been told and everything we had gotten rid of was a shock. There was absolutely no way we increased our weight by 1,000 lbs. Lance gave us an estimate that was supposed to be higher than we would reach, plus we got rid of 1,000 lbs of stuff. Overall, that's a 2,000 lbs difference. That is a huge margin of error on a 5,500 lbs estimate.

However it happened, we were given an estimate that was far below what our actual weight was and now we're out an extra $1,000.

  3. Good experience.

Slater was a great company to deal with when I recently moved. I did, of course, shop around before I picked the company I wanted to hire. They offered the best value and the crew was very nice and efficient. I have also recommend them to my sister who is going to be moving soon.

  4. Moving Review.

First the estimate for the local move was $752.00 but the final bill was $1,177.20. I felt this was unreasonable and did contact the company regarding this. The only thing the Company did was take off 30 minutes the moving crew had taken for lunch which on the original bill,$1238.20, I had been charged.
Secondly the crew drank drinks from my refrigerator in the garage without asking which makes me wonder what else they may have taken I have yet to discover.
Thirdly my mattress and box springs (two sets)were soiled.
Other facts: The bill came to far more than the estimate and I had moved one bedroom between the estimate and the actual move.
I felt the bid was reasonable since five months prior I had used another company to move and the cost was $660.00. But upon moving back the cost with Slater (allied) was almost twice as much.
I most certainly feel that Slater Moving and Storage in St. George Utah is not a fair company to do business with and most certainly would not recommend them.
