  1. Horrible, thieving company.

My gf and I used this company out of desperation. The price was right and the lady we talked with seemed attentive and easy going, than the problems started. They pushed our moving date back 3 times, and when the movers finally showed they had tried to double the amount we were quoted by the same woman we had been talking to. So we had to cancel the job, thankfully the mover understood cause apparently. Colonial uses 3rd party movers so they don't officially move stuff themselves. Pissed both us and the 3rd party movers off because of all the wasted time and money.

We decided to just get a truck and drive since we had already lost a week because of these unprofessional goons. And NOW we got tp battle to get our deposit back from them since Colonial themselves did nothing for us, but of course either we can't get ahold of them or they wont give us the right number to their accounting department.

Stay away from these worthless, unproffesional, thieving scumbags.

  2. Out of state move.

I wish I could post the entire 4 page letter I am submitting to the BBB. This was a nightmare: They are allowed to have all your belongings and not deliver them for 15 days- 3 weeks! (it's in the fine print.) We were moving my daughter,(600miles) but her stuff never arrived while we were there to meet the movers. So we had to bring her back home. Now, all of her stuff is in her new home-600 miles away-and she is back home with us with nothing-no clothes, no furniture.. Also, there were additional charges for: "extra space" in the truck, and the walking distance from the curb to the front door. They refused to load and unload until immediate payments of extra charges were made (through Venmo.) Don't work with these people. They created much more stress and didn't nothing to ease this process. So now, we've paid almost $3,000 and we still have to drive 600 miles ourselves anyway to get her back there. Also, this whole process is so convoluted, I don't even know if it's this company, or the movers they contracted with, Golden Van Lines, that are mostly to blame.

  3. Do Not, I Repeat, do Not Use This Disgraceful Company.

If I were able to give -10 stars I would. This company is terrible and should not be used!

They lie and fib your inventory to get your business and tell you that your deposit is refundable and then when it comes time to do your final review of inventory all of a sudden your deposit is not refundable and your inventory is WAY off.

My pick up was rescheduled three times, which caused me to have to pay additional rent on the residence I was leaving. Then, the driver, Lucky, was rude and incredibly unprofessional and got his truck stuck in a ditch at my pickup address. When Lucky picked up my things, he told me at dropoff as long as my apartment was on the 1st floor, I wouldn't have to pay more than $875. When Konstantin arrived at the dropoff location, he let me know that my door was further than 50 feet, and it would be an additional $375, which I didn't have as my pick up cost me an extra $1100 and left me with only $880 to pay the movers. I explained this to Konstantin and asked him to please bring my belongings the 50 feet, and I would have to move it to the rest. When he opened the truck, my things looked as though they were tossed into the it, and many, if not most of my boxes, were crushed with several broken items in them. When I let Konstatin know that I could only pay for the 50 feet, he said ok and proceeded to unload everything just to the outside of his truck and not even the 50 feet. He told me the fee was $863, and I only had $880 in cash, and he kept the $880. I was also told that you have your drivers and that you don't contract out. From what I could tell, the drivers were independent contractors and did not care what kind of service they provided. At pick up, Lucky said to the local man who was helping him load that he would only make $1200 on this job and that he could only pay him $30. Also, upon arrival of my items, I am missing my vacuum and a cooling mattress pad that totals about $650. The mattress pad retails for about $350, and the vacuum is about $300. I will be sure to let anyone I known to avoid your service to avoid the frustration and terrible service. I am sure there is nothing to be done, and I am just out of the money and my broken and missing items.

  4. Colonial is Fraud.

We recently contracted Colonial Moving to move our household goods. We did a thorough video walk-through with them and got a Binding Quote for the move. On the day of the move, the movers demanded on the spot an extra $800 in cash. They claimed it was for moving three items because their paperwork didn't have these listed. We showed our Binding Quote, which did list these items. We tried to call Colonial several times but no one answered. The movers said they are a separate party and wouldn't honor the Colonial quote. We didn’t agree to the amount so they left. After calling, leaving messages and emailing Colonial several times, the sales rep, Savanna Hambrick, said they would refund our deposit in an email. However, when we followed up with Colonial on the refund, they changed their story and said they wouldn't issue a refund because the movers showed up, despite the fact the movers requested a ridiculous amount of cash on the spot for items included in the Binding Quote. We are extremely upset because of the horrendous experience during the trying times. It’s a fraud that Colonial Moving committed trying to scam us to pay significantly more on the spot after giving us a Binding Quote.

This company should be shut down for their moving fraud. If you have similar experience, please also file a complaint with the Dept of Transportation:

  5. Colonial moving and storage LLC.

Colonial moving and storage LLC Horrible company to deal with make promises they will not keep and take all your money please find someone else do not use this company. Brokers that cannot come through and then do not return phone calls or emails or anything and block you.

  6. Unethical!!

I hired a moving company because I thought it would be less stressful - I was wrong! Now, the sales rep won't return my voicemails I have left and the email I sent to him was returned "Message Blocked"! I then sent an email to the company address but have not heard back from them. This was a terrible experience! I was charged extra even when they had to strap my mattress and outdoor chairs to the back of the truck because they didn't have enough room - even though I gave my complete list of items 2 days before the move. The driver wanted to strap the mattress to my car - I told him "no"! I was told by the dispatcher the day before that the would arrive between 0800-1100 the next day. The driver called me that morning telling me the truck had to be inspected because of Covid-19 and that they would show up sometime that day - they arrived at 4:30. I was told to pay with a money order-never was it specified that the money order had to be from USPS. The ones I got from WalMart were not acceptable. I had to go to the bank(good thing I moved back to a city that I still had a bank account in)and get cash. I could go on and on! Just don't use this company!

  7. Run Away.

If I could give this company a negative five star review, I would. These people turned what is already a stressful moving experience into a nightmare beyond my wildest fantasies. Everything that could possibly go wrong went wrong. They are the most disreputable bunch of incompetent liars I have ever dealt with. The degree of dishonesty they have engaged in would have shocked Pinocchio. Preparing for a move from Chicago to Cleveland to start professional school, Colonial had sold me with a seemingly great price quote. They said that their move was all in-house, their own employees did the moving, the same team that picked up my stuff would be the ones dropping it off, I would have a truck all for myself, and their movers would be wearing masks and hazmat suits to prevent the spread of COVID. It all seemed too good to be true, and it was. The team was several hours late (and I was operating on a time schedule), subcontracted, absolutely unprofessional, not even bothering to wear masks (and one was even vaping!). They ballooned the price from $1700 to $5000 on bogus weight/volume estimates, hidden fees, and other stuff that was absolutely not part of the contract. They broke some of my items. They claimed that they weren’t notified about instant delivery to my new apartment (which was supposed to be the plan), and said it would be an extra $800, forcing me to opt for storage for several days to save money. As a result, I was forced to spend several days in an empty apartment living like a homeless person in my own home (but hey, at least I had internet!). All this time, I was still trying to find out when I can expect delivery of my items plus contest this new bogus price gouge. The reps at Colonial are downright liars. They are experts in avoidance and deception of the highest degree. Whenever I asked to speak to the customer rep who helped me organize my move or talk to another supervisor, I am immediately transferred or told that so and so person is currently not working that day. But that is not the case. They will even let your number go to voicemail, as if all the lines are busy. However, if you call them from a different or unknown number, they will suddenly pick up, because they expect you are a new customer that they can swindle out of money. They lied to me about the name of their subcontractor, they claimed they had no idea about where my stuff is, they made up excuses as to why my records were not showing up in their computer system, etc. When my stuff finally did arrive, the mover demanded an additional $900 (because apparently the semi wouldn’t fit through the residential gate), and another $100 for walking distance ($5000 now became $6000). The mover was rude and threatened to walk away when I asked if I could view the storage space, and refused to do anything until he was paid. Furthermore he had the audacity to take a smoking break ON MY STUFF. What he promised to be a one hour move turned into five hours, because he lazed around while his partner did the heavy work. These people are criminally unethical, they are pathological liars, they do not care about the welfare of the customer, and they only exist to profit off of the customer’s misery. This is the first time I have had a customer experience so horrendously awful that I felt the need to write a negative review. Their business deserves to go under and their employees in jail for fraud.

  8. High Pressure Scam Company.

Do not use this company! Fortunately for us I found they were only a broker prior to reserving. The sales person would call or text every 15 minutes trying to get a credit card number. Reputable movers do not operate that way. Stay clear of this company! I asked In writing the sales person Joe Sullivan If they would sub contract out our move. Joe answered in writing “No, they have their own trucks and movers“. He also said on the phone his company has 500 trucks across the US and timing would not be a problem. All a lie! They will tell you anything to obtain your credit card number. Please stay away, moving is tough enough without being scammed.

  9. It’s called EXTORTION.

How companies are still allowed to operate this way is unbelievable.

My fault should have checked everything out first but never new the name of this company until I had their paperwork in my hand.

Did an internet search first. First mistake.

Believed sales pitch that they were not brokers. Colonial movers I think out of FL. Get a quote of 1900 for 80 boxes and 2 slabs of granite. So everyone knew about the granite.

They send these mf’ers to our house in WA. Look over our stuff, and said they want 4800.

I said no thanks I’ll move it myself. Call back with $3000 and we have to sign a waiver for the granite. I’m in AZ at this point so said ok. They Left in 2 hours my son who was there calls saying they left the granite.

They called and want 1/2 the money Venmo. I said when are you coming back for the granite, tomorrow they say. Ok that’s when I’ll send the money. Now the nightmare and extortion starts. They now say the can’t do the granite and I said if that was the case they should have said before taking my stuff. So bring it back. Ok for $1000. No So I call the broker no help your on your own and we’re keeping your $700 deposit.

After a few phone calls was told you pick it up you can have it no charge.

Me and my son fly back to WA rent a truck get the granite and call for a address. Now told he wants $500. Talk him into $300.

Call police called bank talked to the storage place nobody can help. Paid the 300 and got my stuff. Trying to stop $700 deposit since I used my cc.

  10. Absolutely the worst.

Absolutely the worst. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY. I would give zero stars if possible. Company rep swore to me that they were not a broker and were the actual moving company, which is a total lie. The driver for the company they assigned to move me (named Fair and Square Transportation, which was anything but that), was supposed to come on June 16 or 17 which was verified by Colonial, but on the 15th the driver told me he could not come then - only on the night of the 15th. I scrambled to make it work. When driver got there he insisted I owed an additional $360 - $250 for "long carry" and $160 for tape and shrink wrap. Driver claimed he could not pull his truck into the very straight and wide driveway so I had to pay extra for “long carry.” Distance from the house to the truck was only 115 feet (across a flat front yard) and my contract said the first 100 feet was included in my estimate. I only had a few pieces of furniture and about 10 boxes. Driver used tape to wrap blankets around a few pieces of furniture, which my contract also stated was included. Driver insisted shrink wrap was also needed. When I said I would not pay, he tried to walk out and told me he would not take my things. Told me to get another company or rent a truck. This in the middle of the COVID pandemic, after I had driven from Pennsylvania to Florida to pack my items, and paid a deposit months earlier. Because he came at night, I could not reach anyone at the company. I was desperate – there was no way I could make other arrangements at that point - and had no choice but to agree to pay the extra money. When my possessions were delivered 3 weeks later, multiple items were damaged and/or broken, including an antique chair and antique lamp which was wrapped in multiple layers of bubble wrap inside a sturdy box. The box , which was clearly marked “fragile,” had obviously been crushed. As I said, absolutely the worst experience.

  11. Will not return deposit.

I booked a move on July 6th, paid a huge deposit and on the 7th cancelled. I was assured by “Holly” (emails bounce now) that I would be immediately refunded. I have made numerous calls and was told the refund is in process and would take 7-10 business days. Now when I call I get put on terminal hold after being told again that my refund is in the works. Now they don’t even answer. All this to keep my $850 bucks? During COVID? It’s reprehensible. Tomorrow I will spend another few hours and the day after and the day after that. They took my money in a nanosecond but WILL NOT RETURN IT. If I could give zero stars I would. Today I left a message after being on hold with a Sarah Drummond in accounting after being told I cancelled on the 13th. I have email evidence that I cancelled on the 7th.

  12. Hidden Cost.

Please do not use this company, they do not tell you about hidden cost that are incurred by the contracted movers they send..so my bill was $3500.00 more then expected..they would not explain some other charges saying it is to complicated. They are very hard to get a hold of to get copies of final bills..their customer service is horrible. They put you on hold and leaves you waiting for ever never to return to the phone. Terrible, stressful experience.

  13. Moving in a week..

I’m hoping and praying I or anyone else don’t go through hell like the rest of the people on this review page..but that most likely isn’t going to happen from reading all the reviews here. People moving are already stressed out and we don’t need added stress to our lives. That’s why we hire movers; to take that stress away. If I end up going through hell just like everyone on here, we all need to get together to do something about this unethical company cause they already started showing me their true colors when I asked for a refund. Because they refused my refund, I’m stuck with them unfortunately. I’m hoping and praying everything goes smoothly and I will get my things in the same truck it left in with the same movers within a week. I hope I don’t have to pay more than they stated and hoping they do exactly what they told me and relay the same info to the moving company they hire. Had I known that it was a 3rd party company, I would've stayed away from them. I could just hire movers directly myself. But because they mislead people into thinking they have their own actual company and trucks, It’s too late to get a refund once you pay,Smh I’ll keep you guys updated though. If they put me through hell, we all should put them through hell too! Not cool to take advantage of already stressed out customers. These people work from home (even before pandemic) and get commission off of every sale so of course they will tell you what you want to hear. They lie with no guilt and they can’t even get their info straight. The guy told me legally, drivers are only allowed to drive 500 miles per day. But someone wrote a review here saying the person she spoke to said it was 800 miles. Smh. After I called the person I was speaking to out and asked for the number of the company they hired so I can deal with them directly instead of dealing with them (after they just got paid commission from me and don’t feel the need to answer anymore of our questions from reading the reviews), surprisingly..he messaged me back and still tried to act like they have a real company of their own and didn’t give me any info on the people they hired. Smh. Horrible. You want more business and more commission? Then you better make sure your customers are happy enough to write good reviews and not have customers coming after you legally.

  14. Totally shocked at their customer service.

I wish I could post a screen shot here of the nasty conversation that occurred over text from this company!! Don’t even bother with these people. They couldn’t even speak to me with professionalism, and lost any business I would have given right away. And based on the reviews below, I understand now. They just suck overall. Hope this helps someone avoid these people.

  15. Worst Moving Company Ever!

This is the WORST company I've ever done business with. I am not even sure how they are in business. After hearing horror stories about moving companies that broker out your move, I was looking to do business with a direct carrier, one that would pick up my belongings and move them directly to my final destination in Chicago. I was assured up down, left, right, and sideways by my rep Holly that Colonial was a direct carrier and they would NEVER subcontract out my move after she collected a $900 deposit from me. Well, low and behold, the day of the move 3 guys without company gear in a yellow Penske truck show up with a contract from Liberty Moving Group based out of New Jersey saying that they were subcontracted out by Colonial to handle my move. Even stranger, they said that there credit card terminal was down and I could only pay for the 2nd portion of the move through check, cash, or Venmo. After getting on the phone with their boss I was given some story that did not make any sort of sense as to why they could not accept my credit card to pay after my belongings were all loaded into the truck. My belongings were supposed to arrive in Chicago on Sunday June 28th or Monday June 29th at the latest as I was told once again by my rep Holly. After not getting a call on either one of those days I began frantically calling Holly, Colonial, & Liberty all to no avail. I was finally able to get a hold of the dispatcher for Liberty today July 6th, 2020 who was able to somehow get me in touch with Liberty for them to tell me my belongings are still in New Jersey in a warehouse and they may be shipping out to me Wednesday July 8th or Thursday July 9th. I have asked multiple times now to be emailed with any of this in writing so I at least have some sort of a paper trail, but am yet to receive even a single email after being promised no less than 3x that I would be getting an email from the company. Needless to say here I am on July 6th sleeping on air mattress for a week now in an empty apartment all because I was lied to by my rep at Colonial who sounded like a sweetheart on the phone and said whatever she had to say to get a deal that will now no longer answer my calls because as she put it "customer service should not be her problem if the customer service department actually did their job.." Both of these companies are awful and should not be allowed to do business. Stay as far away from these companies as you possibly can. I am not one to out any one personally on the internet, but Holly you really disappointed me. I hope you some how end up reading this review and really think about how your actions impact "your clients".
